Own new customer underwriting and ongoing risk management, and will play a central role in building Confido Legal's risk function
Reports to: COO
Onsite: Two onsite meetings per year
Benefits: Open PTO · Fully paid medical, vision, and dental insurance for you and dependents
Role Overview
The Operations Analyst will own new customer underwriting and ongoing risk management, and will play a central role in building Confido Legal's risk function. This is not a role that simply executes an existing process. We are looking for someone who will run day-to-day underwriting and monitoring while actively improving how that work gets done, then progressively take ownership of broader corporate risk objectives, including risk policy, fraud strategy, partner and vendor risk, and compliance program support.
Growth in this role is measured by scope and impact rather than headcount. The right person will increase the efficiency and maturity of our risk operations through data, automation, and sound process design, and will become a trusted owner of risk decisions across the company.
Key Responsibilities
Data Analysis
Use data to inform underwriting and risk decisions and to identify trends across the merchant portfolio.
Extract, analyze, and report on application, transaction, and risk data.
Establish service levels and performance benchmarks for underwriting and monitoring workflows.
Onboarding and Underwriting
Review and analyze new processing applications for business risk, credit risk, and fraud indicators.
Conduct Know Your Business (KYB) and Know Your Customer (KYC) due diligence, including verification of business registration, beneficial ownership, principal identity, and (if applicable) attorney bar license status
Approve, decline, or pend applications based on established underwriting criteria and sound risk judgment.
Communicate directly with applicants to request additional documentation, resolve outstanding issues, and guide them through the review process to a final determination.
Document underwriting decisions clearly and consistently to support audit and compliance requirements.
Risk Monitoring and Account Management
Manage transaction monitoring alerts, investigate unusual activity, and take appropriate actions to resolve the alerts.
Monitor active merchants for business changes, ownership changes, and updates to Secretary of State filings.
Identify, investigate, and help deter fraudulent activity across the portfolio.
Investigate fee disputes and chargebacks specific to legal services.
Manage processing and disbursement limits over time based on account performance and risk profile.
Escalate elevated risk matters to leadership with clear analysis and recommendations.
Experience & Background
3 to 5 years of experience in underwriting, payments risk, fraud operations, or a related role in financial services or fintech.
Working knowledge of card and ACH payment processing, including chargebacks, returns, and NACHA operating rules.
Proficiency and experience with a scripting language for data analysis.
Comfort building AI-assisted workflows and lightweight internal tools.
Exceptional ability to move between individual case detail and portfolio-level risk strategy.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work professionally with applicants, customers, partners, and internal stakeholders.
Experience with KYB/KYC verification tools, OFAC screening, and transaction monitoring platforms.
Familiarity with PCI DSS and SOC 2 control environments, or experience with compliance automation platforms, or third-party or vendor risk management practices.
Familiarity with trust accounting (IOLTA) and the risk differences between trust and operating accounts
Strong alignment with our core principle: everyone is an owner.
Success (6 months in)
Fully owns day-to-day underwriting and risk alert management with consistent, well-documented decisions.
Has delivered measurable efficiency gains through reporting, automation, or workflow improvements.
